I grew up in Matakana during the war – with memories of a close-knit community that worked together. At two weeks old I started going to church (the Presbyterian) that was in our village in those days. For many years my grandparents, then later my parents, ran the interdenominational Sunday School in the hall beside the church. I began teaching also when I was twelve. (I had actually started running Sunday School with my dolls when I was about four.)
When I left home I trained , then worked as a teacher for three years after which I attended Bible College of NZ then joined Wycliffe Bible Translators and, in 1966 went to Papua New Guinea where I specialized in running adult literacy programmes. During this time I married Larry and had two children, Norman and Jenny (now Eirena). After 20 years we returned to NZ and I took up children’s work again – running Sunday Schools and teaching English to speakers of other languages. In 2006 we moved to Warkworth and in mid 2008 I was asked to head up the Children’s Ministry at Mahurangi Presbyterian. At first this was only the Sunday Kids Alive programme, but in the following two years our team ran very successful Holiday Programmes also. Now, along with people from other churches, we run a Tuesday lunchtime SUPAkidz Club programme (through Scripture Union) at Matakana School.
